January: Fun at the Beach and Wildlife Walks

January is probably the most likely month in Sri Lanka to have good weather. The hill country stays nice and cool, while the coast stays around 30°C on average. After the northeast monsoon rains, now is a great time to relax on the beaches of Mirissa, Unawatuna, and Galle on the south coast, or to visit national parks like Udawalawe and Minneriya to see animals coming out to drink.

February is a great month for hiking and cultural trails.
Best for: Hiking in the mountains and visiting churches that aren’t as well known.
The good weather keeps going in February, with warm days along the coast and cooler nights in the mountains. The usual temperature in Colombo and the Cultural Triangle (Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Kandy) is around 30°C. In the central highlands, the temperature drops to 21°C.
There will be more people at popular spots like Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Galle Fort because it’s still peak season. To get away from the crowds, go to the northeast of Sri Lanka or look for sites like Mihintale that aren’t well known. You can also go hiking in the Knuckles Mountain Range or visit tea farms now, before it gets too humid.

March still has dry, warm weather, but there aren’t as many people around because of school breaks. This makes it one of the best times to go exploring. May: The Start of Shoulder Season

July: Cultural Sites and Fun at the Beach
The best things to do there are cultural tours, swimming, and water sports.
As of July, the north and east are still having dry, sunny weather, while the southwest is still getting summer rains. The weather is great in Trincomalee, Batticaloa, and Kataragama for swimming, diving, and going to temples.
There are also exciting cultural events this month, and people still like to watch whales off the northern coast. Colombo can be hot and rainy, but the east side of the island has beautiful sunshine.
August: Temple Festivals and Traveling in the North
Festivals in Kandy and Jaffna are good times to visit.
This year, August is the last month of the southwest monsoon. It’s a great time to visit Sri Lanka’s northern areas because the weather is stable at 30°C and the rain is decreasing.
The Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil Festival in Jaffna is a must-see for its lively parades and drum shows. The famous Esala Perahera, one of the biggest Buddhist events in the country, is held in Kandy every year. With fewer people on the beaches in August, it’s a great time to really experience another culture.
September: Taking scenic trains and going to the market
The best for: Train rides and shopping at neighborhood markets.
In terms of weather, September is one of the tougher months. Travel plans can be thrown off by cyclones, and the beaches may not be a good place to swim. The Cultural Triangle, on the other hand, stays warm and sunny, making it a great place to visit many temples and learn about history.
Also, this is a great month to take a train ride through the misty hill country or check out busy local markets. September isn’t the best month for a beach vacation, but it is a great month for experiencing real Sri Lankan culture.
October is a slow month with Diwali celebrations.
Sri Lanka is the best place to celebrate Diwali.
Because of the inter-monsoon and northeast monsoon, October is one of the driest months. Except for parts of the Cultural Triangle, most of the island is hit by heavy rain.
The good thing? Low numbers of tourists and cheap lodging. In October, people also celebrate Diwali, especially in the north and east. The streets are full of lights, music, and fun. Some people find this magical and artistic, as long as they don’t mind the rain.
November: Tea factories and temples with less noise
The best places to go are tea factories, temples, and craft shops.
As the southwest monsoon ends in November, things start to get better. The Cultural Triangle and the mountains can still be affected by rain, though. Late November is a great time to travel if you want to avoid the busy months of December while still enjoying better weather.
There will be less crowding at popular spots, hotels will be less expensive, and the ground will be softer and greener because of the rain. During this month of change, you can visit Buddhist monasteries, tea farms, or pottery workshops.
